China has issued a strong rebuttal to the latest China US Defence Report, accusing Washington of spreading misleading narratives aimed at driving a wedge between Beijing and New Delhi. The report, submitted annually to the US Congress, has triggered diplomatic pushback from both China’s Foreign Ministry and its Defence Ministry, particularly over references to India-China relations, border stability, and China’s growing ties with Pakistan.

The sharp exchange highlights how strategic perceptions, border issues, and defence partnerships continue to shape regional geopolitics in Asia.
China Rejects China US Defence Report Allegations
Responding to questions at a regular media briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian dismissed the findings of the China US Defence Report as distorted and politically motivated. He accused the US Department of War of misrepresenting China’s defence policy to justify American military dominance.
According to Lin, the report attempts to “sow discord” between China and other countries by exaggerating threats and mischaracterising China’s intentions. He added that Beijing firmly opposes what it sees as irresponsible commentary on China’s internal and external affairs.
China’s Defence Ministry echoed these concerns. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang criticised the report for what he called baseless assumptions about China’s military development and normal defence activities.
Pentagon Report Points to India China Border Situation
One of the most sensitive aspects of the China US Defence Report relates to the India China border situation, particularly along the Line of Actual Control. The report suggests that Beijing may be using reduced border tensions to stabilise ties with India while simultaneously preventing closer strategic alignment between New Delhi and Washington.
The report references a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October 2024. It notes that an agreement on disengagement from remaining standoff points along the LAC was reached shortly before the meeting.
US analysts interpreted the engagement as the start of a broader diplomatic push, including discussions on border management, visa facilitation, resumption of direct flights, and people-to-people exchanges.
China Emphasises Stable Line of Actual Control Tensions
Addressing these claims, Lin Jian reiterated that China views its relationship with India from a long-term and strategic perspective. He said Beijing remains open to strengthening communication, building mutual trust, and managing differences responsibly.
On the issue of Line of Actual Control tensions, Lin stated that the current border situation is generally stable, with smooth communication mechanisms in place between the two sides. He stressed that boundary issues are bilateral matters and opposed what he described as third-party interference.
China also rejected references in the report to Arunachal Pradesh, reiterating its sovereignty claims while maintaining that border management discussions should remain confined to Beijing and New Delhi.
Focus on China Pakistan Defence Cooperation
Another major point of contention in the China US Defence Report is the growing China Pakistan defence cooperation. The Pentagon document highlights expanding collaboration between Beijing and Islamabad in areas such as defence technology and space cooperation.
The report goes a step further by suggesting that China has likely considered establishing additional military facilities abroad, including a possible base in Pakistan. While Zhang Xiaogang declined to directly address the base-related claims, he criticised the report for exaggerating what it labels a “Chinese military threat”.
Zhang accused the US of using geopolitical bias to mislead the international community and provoke confrontation rather than promote regional stability.
China Accuses US of Fabricating Threat Narratives
Chinese officials stressed that such reports are released annually and follow a familiar pattern of what they see as threat inflation. Zhang urged Washington to stop fabricating false narratives and interfering in regional affairs under the guise of security assessments.
According to Beijing, the report reflects erroneous views of China’s intentions and unfairly portrays routine military cooperation as aggressive expansion.
Why the China US Defence Report Matters
The latest China US Defence Report underscores the growing complexity of Indo-Pacific geopolitics, where border management, defence partnerships, and diplomatic signalling intersect. While the US frames the report as an objective assessment of military developments, China views it as part of a broader strategy to contain its rise and strain its relations with neighbouring countries, including India.
As India navigates its strategic autonomy amid competing global powers, developments along the Line of Actual Control and regional defence cooperation will continue to attract close international scrutiny.
