CM Pinarayi Vijayan Warns Against Portraying Sree Narayana Guru as Mere Religious Saint

Kerala, September 8, 2025: On the occasion of the 171st birth anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan cautioned against attempts to reduce the legendary social reformer’s legacy to that of a mere religious figure. Speaking at the inauguration of the Jayanthi celebrations in Chempazhanthy, the CM stressed that such efforts are part of a larger agenda to distort Guru’s revolutionary contributions to society.

“There are efforts by communal forces to appropriate Guru’s legacy and portray him merely as a religious saint. These must be viewed with caution,” he said.

Guru’s Enduring Relevance

CM Vijayan highlighted that Sree Narayana Guru’s vision extended far beyond religious identity. By challenging casteism, superstition, and religious orthodoxy, Guru laid the foundation for a just, humane, and inclusive society.

“His relevance only grows with time. Guru pulled Kerala out of the murky waters of casteism, religious orthodoxy and superstition. He laid the foundations for a just and humane society by declaring that no one should be excluded from social progress,” the CM noted.

Referring to Guru’s discussions with writer C V Kunhiraman, Vijayan reiterated that Guru emphasized the unity of all religions:

“There is nothing called a ‘Hindu religion’; the core intentions of all religions are the same. He saw clashes between religions as meaningless. For him, love and humanity were inseparable.”

A Message of Social Reform

The Chief Minister urged citizens to reflect on how Guru’s teachings are being upheld today, especially in the face of attempts to use his legacy for institutional or political gain. Guru’s message of ‘One caste, one religion, one God for all’ continues to inspire generations and shape Kerala’s social landscape.

Vijayan also emphasized that Guru’s vision was practical: the world is not an illusion to escape, but a reality to transform through action, compassion, and social justice.

“Yet today, there are deliberate attempts by communal forces to reduce him to merely a symbol of Hindu religious revival. This is a distortion of both history and the essence of Guru’s teachings. It must be recognised and firmly resisted,” he said.

PM Modi’s Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to Sree Narayana Guru on his birth anniversary, recalling his enduring contributions to society:

“On the birth anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru, we recall his vision and impact on our social as well as spiritual landscape. His teachings of equality, compassion and universal brotherhood resonate widely. His call for social reform and furthering education continues to inspire generations.”

The joint messages from Kerala’s Chief Minister and the Prime Minister underscore the Guru’s timeless teachings and reaffirm the importance of upholding his ideals of equality, compassion, and social justice.
